I Finally Made the Switch to Skim Milk – Here’s Why

Skim MilkI honestly don’t know what in the world took me so long. Growing up, I was always drinking 1% or 2% milk. As I began learning about nutrition, I vowed to only drink 1% milk, which I have done for the last 3 years. Eventually I did want to make the switch to Skim milk but I always afraid to. I was used to the milk with fat in it and I assumed that Skim milk would seem too watery.

Well…on my last trip to the grocery store I reached for the Skim milk! I even took a picture to prove it. Plus there’s some missing so it’s not like I haven’t had any of it yet. I don’t drink milk nearly as much as I used to. In fact, I hardly ever drink it alone and that’s good because I’m still a little weird about drinking Skim milk straight. I haven’t done it yet. But I like to put it in my cereal and I mix my Carnation breakfast drink with it too and the taste is fantastic!

Skim milk has NO fat whatsoever while 1% milk contains 2.5 grams of fat, including 1.5 grams of saturated fat. They both contain 8 grams of protein, 130 mg of sodium, 13 grams of carbs and 12 grams of sugar. Skim milk has just a tad more potassium (400 mg vs 410 mg) and it has half the cholesterol of 1% milk.

I don’t drink a lot of milk, but I do cook with it and I will be cooking and consuming Skim milk from now on. I’m not trying to tell everybody that they HAVE to drink Skim milk to be in great shape, but it is the healthiest kind of milk you can buy. It has all the nutrients that the other varieties have without the fat.

fat is good for the body. you’re doing it wrong.

Fat most definitely is good for the body but I don’t count on milk in order to get it. I get fats (those that are healthy and NOT saturated) from other sources such as nuts, olive oil and omega 3 fatty acids – like those found in fish.
