Lower Back Exercise: Barbell Good Mornings
The barbell good morning is my favorite lower back exercise ever. You need to be really careful when you do these. If you’re a beginner I would definitely start out with dumbbells and not going for the 35lb+ barbell. For this post, I’m going to assume you’re using a barbell. It’s very easy to do the exercise with dumbbells as well.

To execute this lower back exercise:
- grasp the barbell with an overhand grip
- bring the bar over your head and rest it on your upper back, where it feels most comfortable
- stand up straight, knees bent slightly, feet shoulder-width apart
- exhale while slowly bending over at the waist and lower yourself until your back is about parallel to the floor
- slowly bring your body back up to the starting position
- perform 3 sets of 8-12 reps
Always use caution when performing lower back exercises, along with all other exercises. A lot of people neglect exercises that strengthen their lower back so it’s important to use caution and not lift too heavy when you are first starting out. Serious injury could result if you aren’t careful and back injuries are nothing to fool around with!
