CytoSport Muscle Milk Review: Vanilla Creme Ready-to-Drink Shake

Muscle Milk Ready-to-Drink Protein ShakeI stopped at Target this past weekend to pick up a few things, I think it was printer paper and a small garbage can. You know how Target is…I ended up picking up some Muscle Milk in Vanilla Creme because it was on clearance. It was a pack of 4 and I paid just over $1.00 for each. I’ve tried the chocolate variety before and always wanted to try the Vanilla Creme flavor too. I tend to like vanilla flavor over chocolate. So this review is geared towards Vanilla Creme, though the chocolate flavor will be almost exactly the same – other than the obvious difference in flavor.

Muscle Milk Nutrition Information

  • 210 calories (90 calories from fat)
  • 10g total fat (4.5g saturated)
  • 10mg cholesterol
  • 290mg sodium
  • 680mg potassium
  • 8g carbs
  • 3g sugar
  • 21g protein

Taste

I was pleasantly surprised by the taste – it’s actually pretty good. It tastes like vanilla and it doesn’t have an overpowering “protein shake” type of taste like a lot of the others do. It does have somewhat of an aftertaste, but I’ve experienced that with just about everything. Even Supreme Protein bars. Although…those are VERY good. Definitely better than any other protein bar I’ve tried and I’ve tried a LOT in hopes of finding something that tasted okay. (Feel free to read my Supreme Protein review)

My Overall Thoughts

Muscle Milk is a great post-workout supplement because of the amount of whey protein it contains, but there are other whey proteins available that I feel are more nutritious. Optimum Platinum Hydrowhey comes to mind. Optimum has less calories, less calories from fat, less carbs, less sodium, NO sugar and MORE protein.

When you compare pricing at Bodybuilding, you’ll find that Muscle Milk’s ready-to-drink shakes will cost approximately $2.66 per serving, while Optimum Platinum Hydrowhey will only cost $1.50 per serving. Keep in mind though that this is comparing MM’s ready-to-drink shake and Optimum protein powder. You will pay more for ready-to-drink shakes just because of the convenience.

After trying both Muscle Milk Vanilla Creme and Optimum Platinum Hydrowhey in Velocity Vanilla, I prefer the taste and nutritional benefits of the Optimum protein powder.

    I like it!

  2. How is it compared to BSN Syntha-6 RTD

I haven’t had Syntha-6 in a while but I had the vanilla powder I think and I hated it. It was a couple years ago though I think? A friend just told me that the MRM whey in vanilla is pretty good if you’re looking for a different brand.
