Creatine: The Performance Boosting Supplement

Creatine is used as a supplement to boost physical performance. Taken predominantly by athletes and those looking to get the most out of their fitness regimes, it is one of the most researched sports supplements today.
Creatine itself is a naturally occurring amino acid and 95% of the body’s stores can be found in skeletal muscle. The rest is mainly found in tissues which have high energy expenditure, such as the heart, testes and brain.
Every time the body completes intense physical exercise, a small amount of creatine is released to provide energy. However, natural stores only last for 10 seconds, which limits the length of time you are able to exercise flat out. The boost to short term endurance and strength which creatine supplements provide therefore help to make them a popular choice with many athletes.
Aside from the boost to endurance and strength, the main benefit of creatine is its ability to help build muscle bulk and tone, if taken alongside a high intensity exercise regime. This benefit was verified to some extent by the Scientific Committee of Food (SCF), who found that creatine was effective at increasing total muscle mass and improving performance of short-term, high-intensity exercise.
Creatine is also said to improve recovery time, as it draws water into the muscle and reduces the breakdown of muscle protein following a strenuous workout. To ensure that water is not stripped from other parts of the body, it is important that people who take creatine drink plenty of water and fluids.
