In my last two posts, we discussed veganism and I posted some simple, yet nutritious vegan recipes. In this week’s post, we will be talking about the benefits of being a vegetarian. Remember that being a vegan and being a vegetarian both of which lead a similar diet, but there is a difference. A vegan’s diet consists of plant-based foods only.
Now, when it comes to being a vegetarian, there are a variety of vegetarian diets. Main reason for that is, there are many levels of being a vegetarian and not all levels have the same diet. All include a diet of plant-based foods and some diets allow diary products, eggs, or even fish or seafood. Regardless of the type of vegetarian you are, there are major health and other related benefits when leading a vegetarian lifestyle. Let’s see what a few of these benefits are, and I bet I’ll have you at least considering becoming a vegetarian.
Since this is considered a nutrition post, I will solely focus on the health and nutritional aspects of leading a vegetarian lifestyle and not discuss and spiritual or moral aspects to vegetarianism.

There are countless health benefits of a vegetarian diet. Here are a few very important ones, which may persuade you to start eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat.
- It is proven that those people that primarily eat a vegetarian diet reduce their risk of heart disease. There are extremely high levels of fats in meats and these fats are linked to causing many health problems in our bodies. So instead of clogging your heart with fats, why not care for your heart by eating more plant-based foods.
- Your risk of getting many forms cancer is drastically reduced by becoming a vegetarian.
- Eating a healthy vegetarian diet also significantly decreases the possibility of having a stroke or becoming diabetic.
- You improve your overall immune system when eating a plant-based diet! Goodbye to those pesky colds that seem to come your way a little too often.
- If you are trying to make some self-improvements with your body, not only will you lose weight leading a vegetarian lifestyle, but your skin will start glowing! When you rid your body of the chemical and toxins associated with meat and replace them with antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, it can only do amazing things to your body! You’ll not only notice your jeans fitting better, but your energy levels will increase and you’ll be able to take on anything that comes your way and look good while doing it!
As you can you can see, there are major health benefits of being a vegetarian! There are also other benefits, but one you’ll see right away is how much lower your food bill will be! Meats and seafood make up for about thirty percent of one’s food bill, by eating vegetarian that bill is now slashed and you’ll be saving lots of money at the grocery store every week!
More and more people are converting to a vegetarian diet, because of all the direct benefits associated with it. Because of that, it is now easier than every to become a vegetarian! Grocery stores, restaurants and even some fast food establishments make it easy for vegetarians. With so many vegetarian food options at grocery stores and vegetarian menu options while eating out, it is now not as difficult to become a vegetarian as it used to be. Go ahead and give it a try, or at least have “meatless Mondays” in your house to help you on your way to becoming a vegetarian.
